IMPROVING CRITICAL CARE FOR ALL OF ONTARIO'S CITIZENS

Acting on behalf of the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, The University Health Network (UHN) selected Navantis to specify, build and deploy the Critical Care Information System (CCIS), a province-wide initiative to retrieve patient stay and acuity data from participating hospital systems and analyze and evaluate them using Microsoft BizTalk Server and the HL7 health integration protocol as its integration platform.

CCIS presents critical care providers with the information they need to support decisionmaking around critical care resource utilization and capacity planning and management. It supports provincial efforts to improve access to care, standardize the quality of critical care service delivery and assist in the monitoring and evaluation of critical care services. This solution has been rolled out to 210 Intensive Care Units in over 180 Hospitals throughout the province. On any given day, 1800 patients and over 5,500 caregivers work with the CCIS system.

CUSTOMER PROFILE

The University Health Network (UHN) is comprised of three major hospitals in downtown Toronto: Toronto General, Toronto Western, and Princess Margaret Hospital.  With approximately 1,000 beds, the UHN is a leader in patient care, research and education.

BENEFITS

ICUs now receive more bed space or staff to accommodate increasing numbers of patients - based on real-time resource utilization data.  These ICU beds are more likely to be allocated to those most in need, as all areas of the Critical Care Strategy work together more efficiently as a system.

Patient safety and care is increased, as the Ministry is able to obtain an integrated view of each aspect of the Critical Care Strategy.  As a result, the Ministry can determine where more training is required, what units require more resources and which life-saving interventions are most effective.
