The World's Largest Digital Library for the Blind

THE CHALLENGE: FINDING INDEPENDENCE

Three million Canadians (10% of the population) have difficulty reading print due to a disability. Literacy and access to information are critical to their independence. That's why the Canadian National Institute for the Blind (CNIB) Library for the Blind undertook a complete digital transformation of its information services.

THE REWARD: SELF-SERVICE ACCESS

The Navantis team, Microsoft Consulting Services and CNIB worked together to create a powerful solution using Microsoft's .NET framework. The portal's inventive eDelivery application for self-service access allows for blind and visually impaired readers to order any library asset online.

Readers can now:

  • Download books, read newspapers, magazines, and research documents
  • Consult cookbooks, encyclopedias, dictionaries
  • Order titles right from the library catalogue

"This innovative and hitherto unique approach resulted in a completely accessible web based library service which from its inception has won accolades from our library users. Many proclaim eDelivery to be the most blind accessible website on the Internet today."
Barbara Freeze, Director, Systems & Operations, CNIB
