THE CHALLENGE: VIRTUAL DISCONNECT
The City of Greater Sudbury (population 550,000 ) places a great deal of importance on the role technology plays in future sustainability and growth. In 1999, the Canadian city established e-Sudbury.com, which, in 2003, was selected by Connect Ontario to receive up to $1.1 million to develop SmartSudbury: a bilingual web portal. This would make Sudbury information readily available in one place online - which it was not before.
THE REWARD: REAL COMMUNITY
e-Sudbury.com worked with Navantis to develop a community portal using Microsoft SharePoint Portal Server, Microsoft Commerce Server, Microsoft Content Management Server and Live Communications Server.
SmartSudbury provides citizens, visitors and community groups with new and innovative ways to:
- Collaborate with other organizations
- Share information
- Access important information and services
"What the portal does is increase the quality of life for citizens by aggregating content in one spot and making community-based information easier to access."
Jody Cameron, Project Manager, e-Sudbury.com
